Why a Good Sump Pump is a Must-Have for Homeowners

In Duluth, MN, where snowmelt and heavy rain often mean water in the basement, a dependable sump pump system is a must. One local homeowner, tired of recurring puddles putting her stored belongings and music equipment at risk, reached out to DBS for a permanent solution.

A Sump Pump Alone Isn’t Enough

Many homeowners assume that a sump pump is all they need to keep their basement dry. But without proper drainage, water can still collect in low spots or leak through foundation walls. That’s why we installed the WaterGuard® drainage system along the basement’s perimeter. This below-floor system captures wall seepage and floor leaks, directing water straight to the sump pump—before it can pool or cause damage.

Smarter Design From the Ground Up

We also replaced the old sump basin with a perforated model, designed to draw in groundwater from beneath the slab. This relieves hydrostatic pressure on the foundation and ensures that hidden moisture doesn’t go undetected. A sealed basin without perforations misses much of that below-floor moisture, leaving your basement vulnerable.

Why We Chose the TripleSafe™ System

For maximum reliability, we installed our TripleSafe™ sump pump system, which includes:

  • Pump 1: A robust 1/3 HP Zoeller pump for everyday water flow (up to 2,600 gallons/hour).
  • Pump 2: A 1/2 HP backup pump for high-volume conditions or primary pump failure (up to 6,200 gallons/hour).
  • Pump 3: A battery-powered backup pump to keep the system running during power outages.

All three pumps are housed in a unique “figure eight” basin design that allows them to fit snugly together. This compact, efficient system ensures continuous operation, even during the worst-case scenarios. Unlike single-pump systems that can fail or get overwhelmed, TripleSafe™ is built for resilience and peace of mind.

Sealing the Deal

We went a step further by sealing and insulating the rim joists, reducing drafts and moisture entry points. An exterior discharge line ensures collected water is safely directed away from the home’s foundation.

The Result: Lasting Peace of Mind

With this comprehensive system in place, the homeowner no longer has to worry about flooding or damage to her gear. Now she can enjoy a dry, comfortable basement—rain or shine.
